CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SHINNECOCK YOUTH WHO COMPLETED THE 2016 NATIONAL YOUTH PROJECT VENTURE LEADERSHIP PROJECT.
Posted on: September 21st 2016
The Project Venture promotes a productive community of positive peer culture of youth who have developed a heroic value system that ranged from ages 10- 12 years of age. The program encourages the children to work together to build sustainable, active, youth leadership. It provides opportunities, inspires, and supports others to create change in their own communities.
Project Venture focuses primarily on middle school youths. This age group is naturally developing its identity and it’s a perfect time for mentoring to be effective. Project Venture is adding a mentoring component, pairing a youth with a mentor throughout the duration of the program. During that time the two will participate in weekly planned activities to strengthen the relationship and improve the young person’s confidence and hopefulness. Mentors will receive continuous training and will participate in meetings to report the young person’s progress. This model was successfully used during the Project Venture Summer Program. Our hope is to expand this program throughout the school year.
This summer program participants attended several new trips. Escape Room and Island Rock which both are located on Long Island. These two activities focus on problem solving skills, strengthens self-confidence, and creates a sense of achievement. The youths had a great experience with team building. They were challenged to work together, and communicate under pressure to solve a riddle and “Escape” from a secured room. They relied on each other, and discovered the skills needed to accomplish a common goal. The perfect test for any team.
It is hard to believe that Project Venture has ended. This summer has been extremely rewarding and successful for everyone. Our outstanding instructional staff has provided many meaningful learning experiences and activities for program. We are also very thankful to all the participants and helpers this year for a fun learning experience. Your support and encouragement have also been invaluable to their educational success.
